The Reality and Nature of Miracles

  • The Naturalistic worldview denies the possibility of miracles as it denies the reality of God and the supernatural. However, this denial is a philosophical assumption of faith.
  • If God exists supernatural miracles are possible. If God is personal and loving, as the Bible declares, supernatural miracles are probable.
  • The existence of the universe, out of nothing, is the greatest miracle ever. There is no Naturalistic explanation for it.
  • The Bible contains stories of hundreds of miraculous events. However, it's important to remember that the Bible covers thousands of years of human history. Miracles were as incredible and unique in biblical times as they are today.
  • The biblical accounts of Jesus' miracles were written in such close proximity to his lifetime that it is highly improbable that these were legendary accretions into the text.

How the Bible was Put Together

  • Much, if not all, of the Old Testament as we know it today was accepted as Scripture in Jesus' day (see Luke 24:44).
  • The historical evidence suggests that by the end of the 1st century A.D. the entire Old Testament that we know today was accepted as Scripture.
  • The New Testament canon was recognized based on strict criteria: 1) they were books written by a known apostle or an associate of an apostle; 2) they were books in wide circulation throughout the early church; 3) their teachings were consistent with orthodox Christian theology as revealed in other Holy Spirit inspired Scriptures.
  • Internal biblical evidence demonstrates that many of our current New Testament books were accepted as Scripture and in wide circulation throughout the early church (see Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:27; and 2 Peter 3:15-16).
  • Ultimately it was God who brought the canon of Scripture together through the divine guidance of the Holy Spirit at work in God's people.

Jehovah’s Witnesses

  • Jehovah's Witnesses claim that the Christian Bible has been corrupted and that their New World Translation is the only accurate version of the Bible today; in-spite of its numerous translation errors and documented changes over the years.
  • Jehovah's Witnesses deny all of the major doctrines of historical, biblical Christianity, including: the Trinity, the deity of Jesus Christ, the personality of the Holy Spirit, and the blood atonement of Jesus Christ, and the reality of Hell.
  • The Jehovah's Witnesses have a history plagued by false prophecies, including: the failed returns of Jesus Christ in 1874 and 1914, the failed coming of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in 1925, and the failed prophecy that Armageddon would occur in 1975.
  • Jehovah's Witnesses are zealous in their door-to-door evangelism. However, it must be remembered that their zealousness is rooted in their need to earn their salvation through good works and faithfulness to the Watchtower organization.
  • If you only have a minute to share with the next Jehovah's Witness who comes to your door, share with them the true gospel found in Ephesians 2:8-9.

The Evidence for Jesus’ Resurrection from the Grave

  • The Jews, Romans, and Christians of the first century all agreed that Jesus' burial tomb was empty.
  • The Bible records over 500 eyewitnesses to the resurrected Jesus, many of these eyewitnesses saw Jesus on more than one occasion and even at the same time, sometimes in groups of hundreds of people.
  • What could account for the radically changed lives of people like Saul (Paul), Jesus' earthly brother James, or the disciples? Their testimony is clear. They saw the resurrected Jesus.
  • The rapid spread of the early church in the hostile climate of first century, Roman occupied, Jewish Israel can only be explained through one fact: Jesus truly had risen from the grave.
  • All but one of Jesus' disciples died martyrs deaths because of their claim that Jesus was the risen Lord. None of his disciples ever renounced their testimony of the resurrection.

The Uniqueness of the Bible

  • The Bible contains sixty-six books, written by forty different authors, over a period of 1500 years, on three different continents, and in three different languages. Yet, within this diverse collection of books we find a common storyline and theme (God's love and redemptive plan for humanity) with no contradictions.
  • The Bible contains hundreds of prophecies that have been literally fulfilled in history. For examples, see Daniel 2; Isaiah 13; Luke 21:5-6.
  • The Bible has regularly been confirmed as being historically, archaeologically, and geographically accurate.
  • The current Old Testament that we use today has proven to be 99% accurate when compared to the Dead Sea Scrolls dating from 200 B.C.
  • The current New Testament that we use today has proven to be 99% accurate when compared to the over 10,000 partial and complete New Testament manuscripts dating from the first three centuries A.D.

Darwinian Evolution

  • Darwinian evolution is based on a hopelessly illogical premise, the concept of spontaneous generation, or life arising from non-living matter.
  • If Darwinian evolution were true we should literally find millions of transitional forms in the fossil record, but the missing links are still missing.
  • Darwinists claim that natural selection is evidence of macroevolution. However, natural selection, which is basic science, simply demonstrates change within species or microevolution.
  • Critiquing Darwinism does not make a person anti-science. We all share the same scientific evidence. The question is, what theory or interpretive framework best explains the evidence?

For more information on refuting Darwinism, check out Dr. Carlson's 2 DVD lecture set entitled, Evolution vs. Creation, available in our online store.

The God of Islam vs. the God of Christianity

  • Allah of Islam is an unknowable god. Muslims can only know the laws of Allah given in the Koran. Yahweh of the Bible is a God whom we can know personally as our Heavenly Father.
  • Allah is one whereas the God of the Bible, Yahweh, is a Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Allah is changeable and thus cannot be trusted. Yahweh is immutable, his nature does not change, and therefore he is ultimately trustworthy.
  • Allah is transcendent and unapproachable. Yahweh has made himself known by entering human history in the person of Jesus Christ.
  • With Allah salvation is based on works of legalism. With Yahweh salvation is based on grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Atheism

  • Atheism is not a scientific position, but rather a philosophical worldview that is based on faith.
  • Atheism necessitates a belief in Darwinian evolution, which is a very problematic explanation for the origin of life.
  • It is interesting to note that there has never been a purely atheistic society anywhere in the history of the world. Humanity appears wired to seek God.
  • Many Atheists reject God for personal or subjective reasons. So while it is important to look at the objective evidence for God, it is also essential that we speak to Atheists with love and compassion.

The Bible’s Amazing Prophecies

  • Prophecy makes up almost one-third of the Bible.
  • Fulfilled prophecies are some of the best evidences for the inspiration of Scripture.
  • The Bible contains hundreds of prophecies relating to individuals, cities, nations, and empires, all of which were historically fulfilled. For examples, see Jeremiah 25:11-12; Isaiah 44:28; Ezekiel 26:3-14.
  • The Old Testament contains over 300 prophecies concerning the coming of the messiah, all of which were fulfilled by Jesus Christ.
  • Some of the greatest prophecies in Scripture have yet to be fulfilled, such as the rapture of the church and the second coming of Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 24).

Reincarnation

  • Reincarnation is the basis of afterlife taught in Hinduism, Buddhism, the New Age Movement and numerous other cults.
  • Reincarnation is only possible in a Pantheistic worldview that says god is an impersonal, universal force. The personality of God, as taught in Scripture, is an absolute refutation of the concept of reincarnation.
  • The blood atonement of Jesus Christ completely does away with reincarnation based on Karma. Jesus was the eternal Lamb of God who paid the price for our sins "once for all time" Hebrews 10:10 says.
  • The resurrection of Jesus Christ and the promised resurrection of believers deny a cyclic afterlife such as reincarnation.
  • One verse completely dispels the idea of reincarnation. According to Hebrews 9:27 we will all die once and after death comes judgment, not cyclic rebirth.
